I wanted to respond to an earlier comment suggesting there is not a historical record of beaver-teeth being lashed to a handle to create an early carving tool.
There is an historical record.
Notably, Capt John Smith living amongst the Native tribes of Virginia commented ( The Generall History of Virginia -1624 )specifically on this early tool " he hath the tooth of a beaver, set in a stick, wherewith he grateth by degress". Additionally Karan Bjorkland, in The Indians of North America , discusses how these early beaver-tooth knives " were used just as the beaver naturally- by pulling it towards the user."
Thanks everyone for the continued intrest!
